So the latest news on FarmVille this morning is that – for 48 hours only – the circus in town and they’re giving away baby elephants! Did you get yours yet? If not, give a baby elephant to all of your neighbors and hope that they return the favour. It looks as though it will be several days before the baby elephants mature and we find out what their harvest is (or what they turn into!) – and is anything ever going to happen with all of those hot air balloons they were giving away a while back?

Anyway, when you’re playing FarmVille there are several bottlenecks that can stop you progressing as fast as you would like, and one of the big ones is coins – how do you raise money so that you can spend it, buy cool stuff for your farm and move up the levels?

If you log into Facebook everyday then make sure you check on your farm as well, even if you only have a minute – when you first visit your farm every day you win coins in the daily raffle. It’s usually less than 100, but every coin counts!

If you have a little more time, then give your neighbors a hand with their weed/ fallen leaves or bird problems. For the first 20 neighbors you help out you’ll get 20 coins, which quickly adds up. After that you only get 5 coins for each neighbor, but the clock resets every day. You don’t have to wait for the help requests to come up on screen – visit all your neighbors and see if they need a hand.

Check your news feed regularly to find out whether any of your neighbors are celebrating winning a ribbon, so you can cash in on their success. Click on the bonus links to get 50 coins for a yellow ribbon, 100 for white, 250 for red and 500 for blue. Ribbon celebrations expire after a certain length of time/ number of bonuses.

A relatively recent innovation is that you will sometimes get a cash reward if you miss out on giving a home to one of the lost animals – so try clicking on the link even if someone else says they’ve given the animal a home (and sometimes there’s more than one animal looking for a home, so you might get lucky!).

And don’t forget that if you find a lost animal yourself, and send it out to find a home amongst your neighbors, that you’ll get a bonus when it has been rehomed, so check your notifications.

You’ll get some kind of bonus every time you receive a new ribbon – sometimes it’s cash, sometimes it’s experience points, sometimes it’s a gift and sometimes it’s a combination of things. If you’re working towards a particular ribbon and you need coins, don’t forget that you can sell the items on your farm to raise coins. My personal preference is to sell the trees and animals that are easily replaced (because you can buy them yourself), but the ones that can only be received as gifts are usually worth more money – you can sell a horse for 105 coins, for example.

Of course, harvesting crops, trees and animals is the most sustainable way to raise coins. And if you’re really desperate then you can buy coins with real life cash, via PayPal.
