Do developers dream of electric sheep? As I mentioned in my last FarmVille post, the FarmVille game is in beta and things are constantly evolving. It seems that all of the exciting changes this week are in the field of animal husbandry.

First up came the revelation that, after three days, Ugly Ducklings mature into swans! When you see it written down it makes perfect sense, but I for one didn’t see it coming. When swans mature, you can collect swan feathers from them, so they’re worth keeping around. I know of at least one FarmVille player who wasn’t collecting Ugly Ducklings because they are …well… ugly and she didn’t want them messing up her farm. She has changed her tune!

The rewards of keeping the various FarmVille animals that have appeared so far are as follows:

  • Sheep give wool, which is worth 28 coins

  • Black sheep also give wool, but it’s worth 56 coins

  • Chickens lay eggs, worth 8 coins

  • Cows give milk, worth 6 coins

  • but Brown cows give chocolate milk, worth 12 coins!

  • The horse hair harvest from each horse gives you 84 coins

  • Goat milk is 54

  • Pigs find truffles, worth 30 coins

  • Rabbits give angora wool, worth 60

  • Down feathers, from Ducks raise 45

  • Swan feathers, 80

So you can see it’s really worth going after those lost animals, as the ones that are different from the standard varieties bring in more cash.

And that’s not the last of the upgrades – as of today, animals can wander around the farm! It looks as though all new animals you buy or are gifted will wander by default; for existing animals you have a new option when you click on them, to allow them to walk around.
