Day thirty eight: smaller house is smaller

Fixed some terminology. Renamed the floors. Oops.

I do like a bit of austerity now and again. Having had a successful Austerity August, it was high time I cut back further on the floor space (and subsequently construction costs) of Cooper Acres.

When I started this project, the first plans came out at 655 square metres of floor space over two floors. This iteration, after many hours of faff and fiddle-faddle, comes in at a much smaller 506 square metres – a reduction of more than 20%. It’s still a very big house, far larger than our current place, but at the same time it has far more rooms.

I’m finding it easier over time to eke back wall lengths and still keep good sizes for rooms. Mindful of making rooms too large, I’m still using real-world examples of rooms that I feel are the right size, and going from there.

Here goes. First Ground floor plan view (click for bigger):

A nice, pretty external shot from the SW corner.

And, finally, another SW shot with the swanky roof. And yes, I know there’s a gaping hole in the dormer. I’ll fix that before we move in.

I have my design and planning course tomorrow at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon, so I’m hoping to have some interesting stuff to report back on.

You see to have some walls in the middle of some doors there.

Bottom left hand corner of the garage, and bottom left hand corner of the boiler room.

Hmm, yes. Good spot. QA wasn’t stellar on this build, was it?

Why on earth would a design tool not warn you about such a thing?!

I put it down to one of the quirks. This same tool lets me design levitating houses, and yet doesn’t have any options for a garage door. Go figure.
